Wallace and Shirley operated Shirley's Bay View Inn for approximately 10 years and enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. Many of which became friends and were constant visitors to the island. Both Wallace and Shirley were born on the island, grew up, attended school, married, and made Tangier island their home until approx 3 yrs ago. They now have a home on the mainland but continue to stay on the island more than the mainland. "There is no place like Tangier Island", according to Wallace and Shirley. Wallace was like Aunt Ruth. Being a native of the island (8th generation), he knows Tangier Island "like the back of his hand", its history, and how the island residents have struggled to survive from years gone by. It is a unique way of life, but one that is not for everyone. Do not look for "nite-life" while on the island unless you enjoy evening strolls and quiet time. A nature lovers haven, a bird watchers paradise, an adventure's dream, that is Tangier Island, Virginia. ...... |
